Sony unveiling PS3 Slim(mer). Should I care?

The new PS3 Slim(mer)
A slimmer PS3.

It is being reported that Sony is planning on releasing a slimmer version of the PS3 console this holiday season. I have yet to see any detailed technical specs of the new unit other than that it will be lighter and smaller than the existing PS3 Slim models and will have a bigger hard drive out-of-box (250 gig or 500 gig models will be available).

I don't really see the point in this move; although, I guess if the lighter, smaller unit is going to cut production costs, then it's a smart business move for Sony. But from the consumer standpoint, I don't see any reason why someone would want or need to "upgrade" to the new model.

Maybe they'll release additional technical specs at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show?

Quite frankly, there are only two things that would interest me at all:

  1. Does the console support PS1/2 backwards compatibility? (doubtful)
  2. Does the console have at least four USB ports?

If the answer to both of these questions is "yes", then I might consider replacing my recently-purchased Gamespot-refurbished 60-gig fat PS3. The older (fat) PS3 models are becoming notoriously unreliable, and are prone to experiencing graphics glitches, crashes, and yellow-lights-of-death (usually caused by a faulty GPU). In fact, the refurbished PS3 that I bought already shows symptoms of a bad GPU, since I see graphical artifacts and oddly-colored textures when playing Demon's Souls and Dark Souls (not having problems with any other games yet though). I haven't bothered to replace it yet, since I bought the one-year warranty. I'm in no rush.

They will be doing so without the NCAA license, and under the new title, EA Sports College Football. I guess Bill Walsh wasn't available for licensing either? Expectations...

I was hoping for a major turn around, and for the Bears to be playoff contenders in a relatively weak NFC North. But now, I'm not so sure. I doubt we'll see a completely pathetic flop of a season...
